Summer changes …..

Changes this season…changes in classes and nature journaling.

This June I will be offering 4 more botanical art classes in the month of June.  Class will be on Wednesdays from 10-1pm on June 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th.  The 4 week session will be $150.00 and those who want a drop-in option they will be $35.00 per class (drop-in option only available to previously enrolled students).

Nature Journaling will also be changing this year….  Kitchawan Farm has gone through some reorganization and is now being farmed by a NYC restaurant, so this summer we will be trying something different.  I was so inspired by Dick Rauh as I know so many of you were I thought this would be a great venue to carry on and draw our park. Looking at the lovely trees and surroundings of Lasdon I was reminded what a beautiful park we have….so this summer we will meet and draw the trees, the formal gardens and many of the beautiful views and structures of the park. So get out your camp chairs, sun hats and pens and watercolor pencils…and get ready to sit under some shady trees and draw Lasdon Arboretum.

For those of you that missed Dick’s tree workshop here are some photos of our day…Dick Rauh guided a wonderful workshop with his energy and enthusiasm, as always he was an inspiration to everyone that had the honor of sharing the day with him.  Thank you Dick for being our teacher for the day 🙂

Nature Journaling classes at Lasdon Park will be $20.00 per class…pay as you go. The first class will be on Thursday, June 7th. and will run for 6 weeks. Supply list at the bottom of this post. They will be held on Thursday mornings from 10-1pm. Rainy day adjustments will be made via email the night before class.  We may also visit other venues over the course of the summer 🙂

NATURE JOURNALING SUPPLY LIST

Essentials:

Back pack or bag to carry supplies.

Journal 9×11 or 9×5 journals or in this general size, these journals can be bought at any art store.  Paper should be acid free with heavier paper that accepts watercolor this will allow you more freedom to apply color. You may also use cold press watercolor paper journals for those of you who would like to work with watercolor pencils 🙂

Fine tip marker (micron .005-.01 and 1 are my favorite) there are many fine tips on the market, make sure they are permanent ink. There are also sets of microns available that you can purchase…just be sure that they have some fine points in the set.

Ninji Watercolor Brush great for the field if your using watercolor. They come in multiple sizes..fine, medium and large…I have one of each 🙂

Drinking water and lunch or a snack.

Camp stool and a hat to shade from the sun.

Optional:

Pencils (preferably a HB) Mechanical pencils with tiny leads are easy for the field because there is no sharpener needed and bring and eraser if you will be working in graphite.

A small selection of color pencils or watercolor pencils if you want to introduce colors into your studies. A water brush if you would like to create washes or bring a brush and small container of water if you don’t have a Ninji Water Brush.

Some paper towel squares.

Small clear ruler to add to notes about size of your subject.

A magnifying  glass to see details or a loop.

Above all come ready to enjoy your day =)

Drawing Trees – Supply List and Class Description

My approach will be to emphasize an immediate eye-to-hand type of rendering using technical pens on water color blocks using Black Micron 05, 01, 005 and hot press blocks 10”x14” or 12” x 16”.  Other sketchbooks and drawing materials are fine, the advantage of the blocks is their built-in support.

I also pick the technical pens because they come with their own ink supply- there are now a number of more flexible nib pens available with this feature- be my guest. If you are very unhappy working directly in pen and ink, I will make an exception, but you will miss the tension and excitement that comes from having to make a direct statement. (Believe me there are ways to fudge, even here).

Bring something to sit on, a camp chair or stool, hat, lunch and water.

We will meet in the classroom in the main house for a preliminary discussion of tree architecture and generally what to look when drawing trees: i.e. the differences in the branching patterns of common local trees, the masses of leaf forms defined by light and shade, etc. I will try to help you apply these observational and sketching techniques to the broader field of nature sketching. I will provide you with information about some of the materials and books available to get you started on this useful and rewarding practice. The use of contour drawing technique will be explained, and its application to the sketching of natural forms. We will attempt to complete at least one drawing of a tree in pen and ink.

Look forward to sketching with you.

Yeah!!!!!!! A date for Dick Rauh’s Tree Workshop :O)

Finally there is a new workshop date with Dick Rauh this coming Spring.  The new date is May 21st from 10am-3pm.  Sorry that there has been such a long delay.  Dick life is back in order but he is sharing his time between teaching at NYBG and spending time with his wife in Florida.  He has been booked for weekend classes at The New York Botanical Gardens far in advance but he will be all ours in the Spring.

For those of you who cannot do the workshop after such a long delay I understand and will happily refund you payment of $50.00.  You can email me with your mailing address at lauragould@mac.com  For those of you who are still joining us it will be worth the wait 🙂

If any of my students are interested in a drawing table please let me know.  Our friend Sue is moving to Florida and is letting her drawing table go.  Please email me if your interested.
